एकत्रित महिलाएं (एक कविता)

While working with Sakhi Sangini, the women’s federation created by Kutch Mahila Vikas Sangathan, we frequently conduct various training workshops on topics such as livelihoods, gender sensitivity, legal awareness, cybercrime, land rights, and leadership development.

During these sessions, I have noticed and heard women mentioning how the men in their lives, those who play prominent roles – brothers, husbands, and/or fathers, often inquire about their whereabouts, plans, and timing to return home. Despite the pressure from family members to avoid attending these meetings, the women courageously face challenges to show up.

When I asked them what motivates them to persist, some of shared that the environment they become a part of, during these gatherings, is a significant factor. They cherish the opportunity to meet other women, engage in meaningful conversations, share trivial and important details of their lives, laugh together, and learn so much from one another. It’s like breaking free from the confinements of their four walls and expressing their thoughts freely. They often find a social group here, a sense of belonging.

In one particular meeting focused on Zammen Aawas (land rights), women came together to assert their rights. Men from that area expressed objections, one of them even accused us of “brainwashing”. They couldn’t understand why women were gathering and their purpose of doing it. I was affected by this incident, only to gathered my thoughts and feeling in the form of the poetry below.

महिलाएं जब एकत्रित होती हैं
तब वह सीखती हैं, जानती हैं
कि बराबरी क्या होती है, 
आज़ादी क्या होती है
जब वह बात करती हैं, वह समझती हैं
अपना हक़, अपना औदा इस संसार में

जब एक दूसरे को सुनती हैं
तो पहचानती है एक दूसरे के दुख को
गले से लगाती है एक दूसरे के दर्द को
जब आंख उठा कर देखती हैं
तो फेंक देती है समाज के नियमों को
और चुनती हैं अपने आप को

जब अपनी ही नज़र में देखती हैं खुद को
तो भूल जाती हैं
समाज के दिए गए
मां, बहन, बीवी, रखैल के रूप
जब पहचानती हैं खुद को,
तो लांगती हैं हर दीवार

तब ली जाती है उनकी अग्निपरीक्षा,
परखी जाती है उनकी नज़र ,
सवाल उठाए जाते हैं उनके अस्तित्व पर 
महिलाएं जब एकत्रित होती है 
तब पुरुषों को अक्सर होता है दर्द 
उनके अहंकार का नाश उनके डर पर वार

इसलिए सदियों से महिलाओं को रखा जाता है 
बेडियो में, घूंघट में ,
चार दीवारों में
लेकिन जब महिलाएं एकत्रित होती हैं
तो पुरुषों का और उनके ग़ुरूर पर
होता है आखरी वार
