The joy of play—Toybank creates a space where children can explore, learn, and build friendships through play

As I walked into the Toybank play session, I was immediately struck by the energy and excitement in the air. The sight of children laughing and engaging with a variety of games brought back cherished memories of my own childhood. It felt like stepping into a vibrant world of imagination and creativity, reminding me of the simple joy that play brings to our lives.

In that moment, I was transported back to my own childhood. I watched as children dove into puzzles, pretended to embark on world tours with Monopoly, explored creative mechanics, or simply enjoyed classic games like Ludo. Their confidence, collaboration, and problem-solving skills were on full display as they worked together to overcome challenges. It stirred a deep sense of nostalgia within me, reminding me of the power of play—not just in building essential skills but also in nurturing emotional well-being and joy.

As the session continued, I found myself interacting with the children. Their curiosity was infectious! They eagerly showed me their creations, explaining the rules of their games and inviting me to join in. I was impressed by their creativity and problem-solving abilities. It felt rewarding to engage with them and witness their enthusiasm for learning through play.

Puzzle-solving encourages critical thinking and helps children develop patience and focus. While I was there to observe, I realised that I was learning just as much as the children were. Their ability to communicate, negotiate, and collaborate shone through their play. It highlighted the importance of initiatives like Toybank’s programs in providing access to meaningful play experiences for children who may not have the same opportunities elsewhere.

Play sessions foster teamwork and help children learn how to work together, communicate, and problem solve. What amazed me even more was witnessing children invent their own versions of the games. They added unique twists and rules, showcasing their creativity and imagination in ways that were both innovative and delightful. It was a testament to how play fosters not only fun but also ingenuity and resourcefulness.

Two students experimenting with wooden blocks, creating a domino effect as they line them up and watch the blocks fall one by one.
The students have discovered with the help of their teacher that the game is called Jenga! They carefully arrange the blocks in rows of three and take turns removing them without toppling the tower.

Rather than following the instructions, they decided to create a unique vehicle with rotor blades, inspired by a helicopter, all driven by their imagination.

As the play session came to an end, I felt a profound sense of happiness. The laughter, creativity, and connection I witnessed reminded me of why play is essential in our lives. It’s not just about the games; it’s about the joy of learning, the friendships formed, and the skills developed along the way.

Toybank play sessions are more than just activities; they are experiences that foster growth, learning, and happiness.
