क्यूंकि मैं भी पढ़ना चाहती हूँ, आगे बढ़ना चाहती हूँ |

While looking at Sonam, who was wholly immersed in her computer screen, I found myself reflecting on the brief stories I have been hearing from her.

For those of you who don’t know her, she is sonam, gentle and an immensely soft-spoken 9 year old girl who always wears a smile on her face. She is fortunate on the Educational front as she attends a low-fee private school unlike girls of her age. Her brother Durgesh who is just a year elder to her also comes to Jharokha on a regular basis. I have heard both of them communicating with each other which reinforce what sonam has been sharing with me.

My encounter not just with Sonam, but with many girls like her for whom discrimination is embedded in their everyday lives, nudged me to pen down these lines. Read it to know what it takes to be a girl child in rural India .

क्यूंकि मैं भी पढ़ना चाहती हूँ, आगे बढ़ना चाहती हूँ

बुरा लगता है जब भाई को माँ बाहर जाने से, खेलने-कुदने से, पढ़ने-लिखने से मना नहीं करती

बुरा लगता है जब भाई को ज्यादा लाड प्यार और मुझे घर का काम सौंपा जाता है

बुरा लगता है जब भाई को बाज़ार घूमने और मुझे घर पे रहके दुनिया घूमने को बोला जाता है

बुरा लगता है जब भाई को आगे बढ़ने के लिए शहर और मुझे सर धखकर रहने को कहा जाता है

दिल रोता है जब कम उम्र में ही मेरे हाथ पीले रंग दिए जाते है, दिल रोता है जब मेरे सपनों को कुचल दिया जाता है

क्या आपको महसूस भी होता है कि मुझे कितनी तकलीफ होती है, मुझे कितनी घुटन होती है

आखिर मैं भी तो एक बच्ची हूँ, क्या हुआ की अगर बच्चा नहीं, तो क्यूँ नहीं मुझे पढ़ाई पूरी करने दि जाती ?

क्यूँ मुझे विद्यालय जाने से रोका जाता है, क्यूँ मुझे गलत चीजों को भी सहने को बोला जाता है ?

क्या मेरी इच्छाएं, मेरे सपने मायने नहीं रखते, क्यूँ मेरी दुनिया सिर्फ घर तक ही सिमित है ?

मेरी मंजिल को पा लेने की चाह भाई से कम नहीं है, इसलिए मैं समाज को समझते-समझाते कदम बढ़ाती रहूंगी
